Help stop cold calling

Police could soon be joining forces with Anglesey council and Neighbourhood Watch to make Benllech a NO cold calling zone.

The move comes following an incident last week when a man tried to enter the home of an elderly disabled person claiming he was from Neighbourhood Watch.

PCSO Iona Beckmann said the man, between 20-30 years of age, told the resident that he wanted to discuss home security, put his foot in the door and asked for a cup of tea.

“At this point the elderly gentleman said that he was going to use his alarm so the man then left the property straight away.

“Following on from this, in partnership with Anglesey County Council’s Trading Standards I have organised a Neighbourhood Watch coordinators meeting on Thursday July 22.

“We are also inviting members of the public to turn up at the Goronwy Owen Hall, Benllech, at 2pm when we will be discussing a new NO cold calling initiative,” she said.

“The idea is for all the partnerships to work together and hopefully set up a scheme in Benllech. We have had occasions in the past when people have been targeted by rogue workers who say that they are carrying outdoing home improvements or distraction burglaries and we want to be putting them off calling and to make residents feel they can turn them away. ” she said.

Anyone interested in helping or getting involved with the new initiative is urged to attend the meeting on Thursday afternoon.
