Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Llangynwyd in Maesteg is set to become the first and only Welsh secondary school to take part in a pioneering scheme designed to help children and young people in developing countries.
The school will be participating in the ‘Be The Change’ project organised by the charity Free The Children which will enable pupils to become active global citizens and support their peers in the developing world.
A meeting will take place at the school on Wednesday 24 November where pupils will discuss how they can work together to free children from poverty and exploitation. The project will seek to develop leadership skills through a series of special workshops and demonstrate that children are able to bring about positive change in the world.
The project will allow 30 of the most outstanding pupils from participating schools to travel overseas and visit different projects which are making a difference to people’s lives.
Councillor Alana Davies, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity and it is great to see local young people supporting such a worthwhile project.
“I wish them every success as they set about trying to improve the lives of children in developing countries around the world.”
