Round-the-world yachtsman and author Bob Burns has said a big thank-you to the volunteer crew of Angle RNLI’s all-weather lifeboat, which went to his aid in a 7-hour operation off the south Pembrokeshire coast on Saturday night, May 1.
Bob, who sailed round-the-world in the 1980s, was on passage from Dale to Falmouth, when his 11 metre yacht Roamer suffered gearbox failure 29 miles off St Anne’s Head.
Angle’s Tamar class lifeboat ‘Mark Mason’, commanded by Second Coxswain Danny Richards, was launched shortly after 7 pm. When the lifeboat reached the scene, a tow line was passed and RNLI volunteer Mike Young transferred to the yacht to assist Bob.
The Roamer was then towed to the Mackerel stage, at the entrance to Milford Marina, and the lifeboat returned to her station at 2am on Sunday.
Bob, who is 70 and lives aboard his yacht at Watchet Marina in Somerset, recently published a book about his adventures at sea. The book, Roamer Round the World, was launched at the recent Easter Sea Festival at Watchet and, as a thank-you, he presented a signed copy to his RNLI rescuers.
