Up until recently the ‘Caerphilly School of Samba’ only referred to an adult group of enthusiastic called ‘Sambistas’ who are often seen bringing their thunderous beats to many of the festivals and events across the area.
That is all about to change as Heolddu Comprehensive School, with help from Head for Arts and Caerphilly’s county borough council’s Arts Development service, will reinvent itself as ‘the school with it’s own Samba School.’
Heolddu students are embracing the South American rhythms to help establish a Youth Samba group in the area. Once a week, the Heolddu corridors rock to the samba beat as pupils rehearse for their first public performance – when they will join forces with the adult group for the River of Light Parade in Caerphilly town centre on 17th December. Hopefully the enthusiasm shown by the Heolddu students will encourage other young people to follow suit and join in the fun.
Heateacher Phil Jones said, “Music is very much back on the agenda at Heolddu. There is an abundance of talent within the school and we are extremely grateful to be given the opportunity to host the Samba sessions. It is very much open-doors at the school and we will be delighted to welcome other young people from the Borough to join in this creative project.”
