More than 10,000 young people are set to benefit from the Higher Education Roadshow which has kicked off its annual tour of Wales.
Through a joint venture between Cardiff University and Cardiff Metropolitan University (UWIC), towns from Barry to Bangor and Pontypool to Pembroke will see the Higher Education Roadshow make a stop to promote higher education and its benefits to GCSE students. The aim is also to raise young people’s aspirations and ensure they receive accurate information, advice and guidance about life at university.
Cardiff University’s Head of Undergraduate Recruitment and Widening Access, Dave Roylance, said “The recent changes to higher education funding have led to much confusion among young people about how much they will pay and whether it is indeed worth going on to higher education. We’re aiming increase our roadshow activities this year to make sure they have the facts and can make informed decisions about their futures.
The roadshow targets GCSE-level students and utilises a range of activities including presentations for school assembly year groups, to more intensive sessions for smaller groups. Sessions include interactive quizzes covering common misconceptions about higher education, a DVD showing the benefits of a higher education and student life presentations. All sessions are delivered by experienced members of staff including recent graduates.
Ben Hughes, Head of Schools Liaison at Cardiff Metropolitan University, added “Both universities in Cardiff are committed to widening access and ensuring everyone who has the ability and desire to go on to higher education has the opportunity to do so. The Higher Education Roadshow is about collaboration and partnership and feedback from schools is that they welcome this collaborative approach.”
Cardinal Newman School was one of the first to receive a visit this autumn. Keith Anthony, Head of Year 11, from the school in Rhydyfelin, Pontypridd said: “The higher education roadshow is presented very professionally and the material is relevant and well focused for our year 11 students. We have found that it complements the work we do with our students in PSHE lessons, and has helped to motivate students in the past and enhance their interest in Higher education.”
