The historic bridge linking Cilcain and Pantymwyn has been officially reopened by the Chairman of the County Council, Councillor Owen Thomas.
In recent years the bridge has seen significant repairs and additional works to deal with the increased traffic.
Following a public consultation in 2005, approval was given to replace the original bridge.
The new bridge retains the same width restriction as the old one, but with a marginally wider carriageway to accommodate emergency vehicles. The overall bridge is wider in order to provide a footpath. It also includes bollards on either side to deter wide vehicles attempting to force their way over the bridge.
Cllr Thomas said: “The community councils of both villages have been consulted throughout this project and much care has been made to ensure the new bridge still retains as much of its original appearance, materials and features as possible while accommodating both the needs of our communities and the road user.”
Cllr Adele Davies-Cooke, ward member for Pantymwyn and Gwernaffield, said:
“The bridge looks wonderful and is a credit to those who have worked on it; in particular the two stone masons have done a great job. I am pleased that health and safety concerns about the bridge have been addressed, and that emergency services will be able to safely cross it.”
