History brought to life at Carew Castle

Making shields, swords, bunting and banners – Sageston CP School pupils have been busy bringing history to life at Carew Castle.

Since January, four and five-year-olds from Class 4 (the Foundation phase) and their teacher Jessica Llewellyn have been visiting Carew Castle on a weekly basis.

The children have used a variety of artistic tools and techniques to make artefacts from the past in the inspirational environment of the castle.

As well as producing a wide variety of art pieces, the children produced very detailed drawings of the castle.

A celebration of their work and creative development was held at Carew Castle on Wednesday.

Dressed in the tunics and hats which they had made themselves, the children were joined by parents, staff and governors of the school, Foundation Phase advisory team, and staff from Pembrokeshire Coast National Park for a viewing of their work followed by refreshments in the Lesser Hall.

Jo Edwards, advisory teacher for the Foundation phase, said the joint project had been very enjoyable and had many benefits.

“It’s brought learning into the outdoors, developed creative skills and helped the children to become involved in the community,” she said.

“This gives a sense of pride and belonging, and is great for their personal and social development.”

She added that the project had also developed Carew Castle as an environment for learning alongside their existing programmes.
