Larger-than-life masks, to be used for the Spirits of Dragons Cultural Olympiad event at Flint Castle, have been created at an art workshop in Holywell recently.
Members of the Holywell and District Women’s Group, supported by Holywell Communities First, joined visual artist, Ben Davies, to make the masks, which will be just some of the props used for an epic and spectacular performance on 23 June at Flint Castle, where a wide variety of artistic skills will bring to life the history, magic, myth and mystery surrounding this ancient site.
The masks will become characters in a larger theatrical cast representing ages of defenders and protagonists, both real and mythical, in battle for possession of the Castle.
The masks and other props being developed by Flintshire community groups, schools and volunteers will be part of a delightful visual performance emphasising the endurance and indomitable Spirit of Wales; the importance of Welsh artistic and cultural legacy; and the value of international understanding and integration.
The Arts, Culture and Events section of Flintshire County Council arranged this workshop as part of their programme for Flintshire’s Cultural Olympiad involvement, through the Welsh Cauldrons and Furnaces project.
The Holywell and District Women’s Group is one of the local community groups who, together with hundreds of Flintshire’s young people, are preparing for this amazing performance, which will celebrate the Olympics coming to the UK.
The business community in Flintshire has also shown support by sponsoring this once in a lifetime occasion. Deborah Thatcher, representing Nice-Pak International Ltd., a Gold Sponsor of this project, was on hand to see these enormous faces being crafted.
