Two specially commissioned benches have been installed in Wales’ first hospital-based art gallery.
Oriel yr Aelwyd: HeARTh Gallery situated at University Hospital of Llandough, has commissioned the bespoke benches from award winning furniture designer David Colwell, following support from the Derek Williams Trust.
Mr Colwell is a renowned furniture maker who produces modern furniture using eco-friendly techniques and combined with sound structural design. His work was kindly supported by the Derek Williams Trust, which provides a unique contribution to the visual arts to provide a lasting legacy for the people of Wales.
Mel Wotton, Exhibitions Coordinator at the HeARTh Gallery said “This striking furniture perfectly balances stunning design with the functionality required for seating within the gallery. The benches can be moved to complement each individual exhibition and enhance the visitors’ experience.
“We hope that it will enable all visitors to take a moment and relax within the hospital environment, reflecting on and engaging with the artwork whilst enjoying the gallery space.”
The HeARTh Gallery was officially opened in October 2015 as the first of its kind in a hospital. It was developed to reflect the positive difference that art can have on the health and wellbeing of patients, staff and visitors in a hospital environment.
The gallery welcomes over a thousand visitors per month to its exhibitions, which change every six weeks and features work from emerging and established artists as well as a variety of community groups and charities.
