A lucky customer at the Royal Voluntary Service cafe bar at University Hospital Llandough was served up a bumper helping of cash when they won a grand prize raffle netting them a cool £10,000 windfall.

Mr John Shapland, from Peterson-Super-Ely, was attending University Hospital Llandough Hospital for a routine appointment and popped along to the cafe bar for a quick cuppa. While he was there he purchased a ticket for the Royal Voluntary Service raffle and thought no more of it.

John was over the moon when he was notified about the win after the draw took place in mid December. John and his wife Janice revisited the cafe bar to be presented with the cheque by Kevin Thomas, Individual Giving Officer for the Royal Voluntary Service.

Kevin said: “As you can imagine, John and Janice were both extremely happy to win the grand prize in our 2015 Christmas raffle. Almost 50,000 tickets were sold last year!

“The Royal Voluntary Service runs raffles and prize draws as part of their fundraising activities. It provides an opportunity for people to make a small donation to the charity and at the same time to potentially win an exciting prize!

“Our raffle and prize draw programme raises over £1 million per year – money that goes to local services throughout the UK to support older people.”

The Royal Voluntary Service supports over 100,000 older people each month to maintain independence in their own homes for longer with tailor-made solutions. Through its army of volunteers, the charity runs services such as Good Neighbours (companionship), Meals-on-Wheels and Books-on-Wheels that alleviate loneliness and help older people.

The Royal Voluntary Service also provides practical support for older people who have been in hospital through its On Ward Befriending and Home from Hospital services and via its network of retail shops and cafes.
