House of Sport Opens its Doors

The House of Sport has opened its doors to offer local junior football clubs a sneak preview of the new facility.

Hosted by Sport.Cardiff and Director of Cardiff City Football Club (CCFC), Steve Borley, the event was organised to give people the opportunity to find out how the venue will operate and to showcase its facilities which include a state-of-the-art, indoor football pitch, lecture theatres and a gym.

CCFC Academy ran the first coaching session which involved team members from Grangetown Boys Club, Canton Rangers and Cardiff City Ladies.

The House of Sport is the first facility of its kind and is being developed as part of a two-phase build, the first which will officially open later this month with the npower National Academy tournament.

It is anticipated that the second phase will be completed in March 2012 and will see the arrival of a new sports hall and office space.

The facility which is situated behind Cardiff City Stadium, will be accessible to schools, clubs, local community groups, universities and colleges.  It will also be the training home for the CCFC Academy with an aim of developing home-grown talent.

Executive Member for Sport, Leisure and Culture, Cllr Nigel Howells, said: “The House of Sport development is an exciting addition to the city’s sporting infrastructure. It will be a fantastic sports provision for the local community and provide opportunity for local clubs and schools and be accessible to the people of Cardiff.”

The facility has been funded by CMB Engineering and is part of the community wellbeing contribution for the overall Leckwith development.
