A thousand volunteer runners will gather in the grounds of Margam Park for this Sunday’s (6 December) annual Reindeer Run.
The Reindeer Run is a fun run with the objective of raising thousands of pounds for the RNLI’s ‘Train One, Save Many’ campaign. There are two races with a distance of 5k and 10k, and a family ‘Santa Saunta’ of just 2k for families with young children.
Among this year’s entries are two of Mumbles’ lifeboat crew who are taking part to raise money for the new Mumbles Tamar appeal. Rob Tovey, Deputy Second Coxswain, and probationary crew member Andy ‘Badger’ Miles will be completing the 10k and 5k courses respectively.
Mr Tovey said:
‘I’ll be completing the course in full all-weather lifeboat wetsuit and lifejacket, which makes it slightly more challenging, It’s a family event and all of my family will be coming along to support us.’
Andy ‘Badger’ Miles said:
‘I’ve been training to join the crew at Mumbles for nearly a year now. So far I’ve had to lose four and a half stone in weight and have another stone to go before my next phase of training in Poole the first week of February. Not only has this given me the target for fitness but I’m hoping to raise enough money to pay for my training too.‘
The Reindeer Run starts at 10.30am. There will be a Christmas fair inside the Abbey building and lots of festive treats for everyone to enjoy. The ‘Train One, Save Many’ campaign funds training of volunteer lifeboat crews in the UK. Each crew member costs £1000 per year to train to the high standard required by the RNLI.’
