A project between Hunaniaith and Sgiliaith has recently won a national award for the ‘Best Original Digital Material – Further Education’ at the Wales Digital Learning Awards 2014.
The project, ‘Dwy Iaith ar Waith’ – Two Languages at Work – aims to persuade vocational students from the Grŵp Llandrillo Menai colleges how vital offering services through Welsh and English is.
The project was designed by Sgiliaith, a centre offering support on bilingualism and Welsh and English communication skills to further education colleges, by producing a series of short films showing successful business people from the private and voluntary sectors explaining the importance of bilingualism to their business.
Hunaniaith, who commissioned Sgiliaith to complete the work, wanted to increase the number of students choosing to study through the medium of Welsh and emphasise the career and commercial benefits of being able to offer services in two languages in Gwynedd and beyond.
Dafydd Iwan, Chair of Hunaniaith said:
“We’re extremely pleased that our collaborative work with Sgiliaith and Grwp Llandrillo Menai has been nationally recognised. It was a pleasure to work together on a project which has developed into an extremely valuable online resource available for colleges across Wales to use.
“So far, the project has been very successful and the module was completed by 70 students during its first week online. I’m certain that this award will reinforce the message that the Welsh language is a relevant and essential skill for vocational students in Gwynedd and beyond.”
