Huw named ‘Teacher of the Year’ 2010

A Coleg Gwent lecturer has been awarded ‘Teacher of the Year’ at a glittering award ceremony to recognise top performers across colleges in Wales.

Huw Phillips, a physics lecturer from Coleg Gwent’s City of Newport Campus, scooped the national award sponsored by Lifelong Learning UK at the ColegauCymru Awards held recently in Cardiff.  Speaking about receiving the honour he said:

“I am absolutely thrilled with the award. It was an honour to represent Coleg Gwent at the ceremony.”

“Huw is an exceptional teacher,” said Daniel Wooldridge, Head of School for General Education at the campus. “One of his greatest strengths is in inspiring students of all levels of ability in physics which is traditionally seen as a challenging subject.

“He is very innovative in his use of IT and active learning to keep students engaged which is why he has such good completion and attainment rates. Huw never gives up on students and sees it as a personal challenge to get every learner successfully through the course.”

City of Newport Campus Director Gary Handley nominated Huw for the award, he said: “I was obviously very pleased with this outcome and proud to see Huw receive this well deserved award.

“It’s a fantastic way for us to highlight Huw’s personal achievements, especially in respect to continuing to support science teaching in the Newport area.”

ColegauCymru Chief Executive Dr John Graystone said: “It is important that we remember at all times that the purpose of colleges is to support learners in reaching their goals. Excellent teachers are key to enabling learners achieve, and it is right that they are recognised on the national stage.
