A talented illustrator handpicked to design album covers for a world-leading media production company has been selected to return to the prestigious design show which brought his work to their attention.

23-year-old Cosmo Mulford, from Shrewsbury, has produced two illustrated album covers for Universal Publishing Production Music (UPPM) in the first year after graduating from Glyndŵr University.

The work followed on from Cosmo’s portfolio being featured at New Designers 2014, which showcases more than 3,000 art graduates’ work at London’s Business Design Centre every year.

And next week he will be part of the show’s ‘One Year On’ strand alongside 50 other up and coming graduates from across the UK.

Cosmo said: “My first time at New Designers was unexpectedly good. It’s one of the biggest design shows in the country and attended by a wave of big companies and industry professionals.

“The work I did for UPPM was for a company called Gotham Music, which produces background music for films.

“I was chosen along with 12 other graduates they liked at the New Designers show, and they picked me as their favourite to do the final covers, so my work now appears on the cover for their “Sports Drama” and “Ultraglam” compilations. They said they would like to work with me in the future, when the right brief comes up.

“I applied to exhibit at the One Year On show after the success of last year and I’ve been lucky enough to be chosen. Hopefully it will lead to similar results this year and more contacts within the industry.”

Cosmo is following a lifelong dream to work as an illustrator as he enters the early stages of his career, with his work currently taking on a Japanese theme.

“My work has always been heavily influenced by Japanese prints and Manga comics in particular, via artists such as Katsushika Hokusai, Katshiro Otomo and Hiroaki Samura.

“Drawing is the only thing I’ve ever wanted to do. My ambition right now as an artist is to make the most of every opportunity that presents itself and keep creating artwork.

“Regardless of what happens at New Designers I will still be illustrating as much as I can and sending out my work to potential clients.”

Current Glyndŵr University art students are exhibiting throughout New Designers 2015 as part of the main show.

New Designers Part Two takes place at the Business Design Centre, London, from July 1 to 4.
