A scheme to improve parking for people living in Dolgellau will be launched on Friday, 5 November.
The pilot residents’ parking scheme will be operational on Aran Road and Springfield Street in the town, and will benefit local residents who don’t have their own off-road parking spaces.
Under the scheme, the first of its kind in Gwynedd, only residents who have purchased a parking permit will be allowed to park on these streets. It is aimed at preventing the problem of motorists who work nearby or go shopping in the town from using residential streets as free car parks and preventing local people from parking near their own homes.
The scheme will be controlled by Gwynedd Council’s Civil Enforcement Officers and, if successful, will be rolled out to other areas of Gwynedd.
The launch follows a period of consultation with local residents and Gwynedd Councillors, which included a public exhibition.
All money raised through the parking permit scheme will go towards its administration costs. Permit fees are £50 per household and residents can also buy passes which allow visitors to park in the street for a limited period of time.
Councillor Gareth Roberts, Gwynedd Council’s Environment Portfolio Leader, said:
“People living in Dolgellau told us that they were having difficulty finding parking spaces near their homes. We have come up with this scheme to try to alleviate the problem by preventing commuters and shoppers from parking in residential areas instead of car parks.
“If this innovative scheme is a success it will be introduced in other towns in the county where local people have said there is a problem.”
