Improvements at Bedwas Colliery site

Works are progressing well to improve drainage at the imposing coal tips on the hills above Bedwas.

Residents in Bedwas, Trethomas and Machen may have noticed work being undertaken on the former Bedwas Colliery site over recent weeks.

Cllr Ron Davies, CCBC Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Planning, and local ward member visited the site this week to see how the works are taking shape, “Key construction work has been carried out to improve drainage at the site, which is obviously a major consideration to ensure the safety and stability of the tips for the future.”

“Residents will be aware that the former Bedwas Colliery site forms part of Caerphilly County Borough Council’s Local Development Plan, and we are keen to keep the community fully informed about any developments on the site”.

The drainage works are needed because over a period of time, erosion on the steep hilltop slopes has taken place as a result of surface water run-off.

Cllr Davies continued, “The need for this continual programme of works underlines how important it is that this costly, unsightly and dangerous legacy is properly dealt with”.

This scheme was funded by a Welsh Assembly Government Land Reclamation Grant.
