Improvements planned for Barry’s Thompson Street

Following the recent announcement of £1 million of funding from the Welsh Assembly Government’s Barry Regeneration Area Programme, plans for the improvements to Thompson Street are now on display on the Vale of Galmorgan website’s regeneration pages and in an exhibition at the council’s Dock Office.

In the build-up to the commencement of construction work in March, a series of drop-in-sessions are being arranged to provide information on what is planned. This will be in addition to on-going discussions with businesses, residents and other key stakeholders.

The project includes the creation of a new road layout with new paving, drainage, lighting, trees, litter bins, bollards, CCTV and public art. As well as improving the appearance of the area, the project will also create formal on-street parking areas for shoppers; improved facilities for bus services and safe crossing points with dropped kerbs for pedestrians. The bulk of the work is expected to be completed by the end of August.

Leader of the Vale of Glamorgan Council, Cllr Gordon Kemp, said: “Thompson Street is set to be transformed and will serve as a fitting gateway that will link the town centre with the Waterfront via the new footbridge.

Regeneration is about people and places and in strategic terms this project contributes greatly to the ongoing work of our excellent Communities First team in Castleland, the new Castleland Renewal Area and the Safer Vale Partnership.”

“The improvements to Thompson Street integrate well with the emerging renovation proposed for Merthyr Street, Greenwood Street, Coronation Street, Belvedere Crescent and Fryatt Street and a number of other early actions programmed for implementation in the Castleland Renewal Area.”
