The Big Apple beckons Cyw – the face of S4C’s nursery service – with another international nomination for a top award across the pond.
This time the ground-breaking Cyw heads Stateside for the world’s leading children’s television summit, KidScreen Awards.
Ble Mae Cyw? – a feature length film following some of S4C’s best-loved nursery characters as they look to find missing chick Cyw – has been nominated for Best One-Off, Special or TV Film in the Pre-School category.
The production, a major highlight of S4C’s 2009 Christmas schedule, will go head-to-head with Australia’s The Adventures of Charlotte and Henry (produced by Optimistic Pictures) at the awards ceremony held in New York City in February 2011.
Ble mae Cyw?, made by independent production company Boomerang+, combines live action with CGI animation and first introduced viewers to the bright gold tracksuit wearing mischievous rapper, Rapsgaliwn. Rapsgaliwn has since gone on to star in his own pre-school series on Cyw, Rapsgaliwn.
Cyw is broadcast across the UK every weekday since its launch in June 2008, from 07:00-13:30 on S4C and from 07:00 – 09:00 on the weekend. On-screen output is accompanied by a lively bilingual 3D website, s4c.co.uk/cyw, as well as a free app to download for mobile devices.
In 2010 alone, Cyw and its programmes received national and international acclaim. Pre-school documentary series Y Diwrnod Mawr – documenting a special day in the lives of youngsters – was nominated for Rose d’Or and BAFTA Kids UK awards. Cyw was also nominated for Channel of the Year at this year’s BAFTA Kids UK Awards.
Siân Eirian, S4C’s Head of Children Services, says: “This KidScreen nomination is an international recognition of what S4C and its programme-makers in Wales are achieving. To be regarded alongside some of the best children’s on-screen content around the world reflects our commitment to broadcasting children’s programming of the highest quality.
“Cyw has enjoyed an exciting year – extending the provision to the weekends, launching a Cyw app, welcoming new presenters and programmes and the Channel of the Year nomination.”
Viewers will get another opportunity to watch Ble Mae Cyw? when it is broadcast on S4C on 20 December at 08:25.
The KidScreen Awards Ceremony takes place on Thursday 17 February in New York.
