Isherwood: Call for affordable homes strategy

Commenting on claims by Shelter that the number of people seeking help over the threat of repossession has risen by 300%, Shadow Minister for Housing Mark Isherwood AM, said:

“Shelter’s fears make it clear that the Welsh Labour Government must act urgently on its pledge to build more affordable homes. Yet there is still no solid strategy that outlines its plans or how it intends to meet demand.

“Only 4,500 affordable homes were added during the last Assembly – and the First Minister has even refused to apply the extra 12 million pounds received from the UK Treasury to help first time buyers in England – to help those in a similar position in Wales.

“Rather than wasting his energy on criticism of the UK Government, he should be working hard to plan ahead and fix Wales’ housing problems.”

Mr Isherwood also addressed the issue of homelessness prevention:

“Welsh organisations working with people who sleep rough are aware of numerous initiatives in England that simply aren’t available here.

“That needs to change if we’re to properly support those who are faced with the prospect of homelessness.”
