Outdoor theatre specialists Illyria perform James and The Giant Peach at The Welsh Wildlife Centre this summer. This is an exciting new adaptation of Roald Dahl’s much-loved children’s book from acclaimed writer David Wood.
When James is sent to live with his aunts, they treat him horribly. One day an old man gives him a bag containing the strongest magic in the world. When James accidentally spills it near the old peach tree the most marvellous things happen. The enthralling tale is told by its hero James with the help of the very large grasshopper, earthworm, ladybird, spider and centipede he meets along his adventurous way. It’s a fruity production in every sense, filled with “marvellous things”, from the Giant Peach itself, which looks as it might get lift-off at any moment, to a giant octopus.
The six members of the cast dash in and out of character and costume at beakneck speed and are superbly engaging. This entertaining show captures all the fun and excitement of Roald Dahl’s superb children’s classic and also includes plenty of opportunity for participation!
