Jeff Cuthbert AM has backed a domestic abuse awareness campaign launched by the Welsh Labour Government.
The “Live Fear Free’ campaign, emphasises the effect domestic violence has on children who witness a parent being subjected to violence.
The campaign website www.livefearfree.org.uk explains how to seek help along with two high-impact videos focusing on sexual violence against women and the effects of domestic abuse on children.
Jeff Cuthbert AM said: “Domestic abuse is a terrible crime that affects thousands of adults in Wales. While we continue to tackle all forms of domestic abuse we must remember than children are often the hidden victims.
“Witnessing domestic violence can affect children mentally and physically in a number of ways. Children living in a home where domestic abuse occurs also means they are significantly more likely to experience abuse themselves.”
Minister for Local Government and Communities, Carl Sargeant said: “While we have come a long way in tackling this heinous crime, I recognise that more needs to be done and by working with our partners we will make the victims of domestic abuse and their children safer.
“I am sure that the additional 500 Community Support Officers the Welsh Labour Government is putting in place as one of the top commitments in its Programme for Government will play their part in this crucial area of work. These additional CSOs will play a crucial role, working as part of a wider policing team. They will be highly visible in their communities, engaging with people, providing reassurance and tackling a range of issues with partners and community organisations – including anti-social behaviour, domestic abuse and wider criminal activity.”
