Leading his team’s preparations this week in the run up to Saturday’s top of the table clash against Swansea, Pontypridd senior coach Paul John is relishing the challenge that awaits.
Pontypridd, who are placed second in the table, will host first placed Swansea – the only remaining unbeaten team in the division, top points scorers with 261 and top try scorers with 34 – undoubtedly a team in form. To add to the sense of occasion, the match will be screened live on S4C.
Whilst preparing his players for what is hoped to be an open and exciting game of rugby, Paul John knows that such big occasions do not always live up to expectations.
“These games between the form teams tend to be a lot closer than people think, although with all the ingredients of being a thriller. There will be a lot of tension building up to the game, with the added factors of the weather conditions, and the way players react to performing live on TV.”
The Ponty squad are being carefully prepared for what will be, in terms of domestic club rugby, Wales’ “match of the day”. A comprehensive analysis of the performance in last weekend’s away win at Bedwas has been undertaken, with all focus now on the challenges presented by the high flying All Whites.
“It will be a great test for the boys, to face up to the top team,” said John “and with the ethos of both clubs being to play entertaining rugby, it will hopefully be a great advert for the semi-professional game. We will certainly be looking to play our part in that scenario.”
Pontypridd will be defending a long standing undefeated home run, with the “House of Pain” factor being crucial to their approach to the big game.
“We need Sardis Road to be buzzing on Saturday evening” said Paul John. “The players know how much the support can offer in terms of lifting our performance – it’s a big plus for the Ponty boys and can be intimidating for the opposition. I’m sure our fans will turn out in numbers to make their presence felt in front of the TV cameras, hopefully to spur us on to an important win.”
