Joint Spring Clean on Wentloog Levels

Tidy Towns officers from Cardiff and Newport have taken part in a huge joint clean up of the Wentloog Levels. The ‘Spring Clean’ was organised to remove all the dumped waste and litter from both the Cardiff and Newport sides of the area.

For Cardiff, the clean up was organised by both Tidy Towns and Keep Wales Tidy. They were accompanied by Council staff from the Street Cleansing, Enforcement and Education Departments, who helped remove and take away the waste. The Community Payback Team in Cardiff also provided eight volunteers who helped clean a separate area. Cardiff collected 35 bags of waste as well as tyres and a shopping trolley!

Newport City Council invited staff from the Pride in Newport and Newport City Council Countryside Teams. Volunteers from the Wentlooge and Caldicot Drainage Board were also present to help clean out drainage channels that are present across the area. Crime reduction charity NACRO was also involved and 62 bags of waste and 31 tyres were collected on the Newport side of the Levels.

A fly-tipping hotspot in the area was also cleared by contractors. A mixture of litter was found there including a quantity of hazardous waste. This site was also cleared using funding from Fly Tipping Action Wales (www.flytippingactionwales.org) and the Tidy Towns initiative (Cardiff Council), working in partnership with Environment Agency Wales, Newport City Council and Keep Wales Tidy.

Cardiff Council Executive Member for Environment Councillor Margaret Jones said: “This clearance is part of a long term strategy to clean up the Wentloog area. Through partnership working we are really making a big difference there and it is very heartening to see the amount of waste collected by all those involved.”
