Jones calls for review of cemetery decision

Clwyd West MP, David Jones, has expressed concern at proposals by Denbighshire County Council that mean that Ruthin people will have to bury their deceased relatives in Denbigh, rather than in the town of their residence.

There are now only a few burial plots remaining in Ruthin, but the Council has decided not to extend any of its existing cemeteries in the town, blaming “the constraints that are now in place on council budgets”.

After complaints from constituents, David Jones wrote to Denbighshire chief executive, Mohammed Mehmet, to urge the council to reconsider its decision, but has been told that there are still no plans to provide new burial plots in Ruthin.

David Jones said:

“Whilst understanding the financial problems that all councils are now facing, it seems harsh to expect the bereaved to travel eight miles to visit the graves of their loved ones.

“I would urge Denbighshire to look again at this issue again in the light of simple humanity.

“People need to visit family graves and this decision will cause great distress to many people in Ruthin.”
