Jones: Ministers Must do More to get Fair Deal for Flood Victims, says AM

Ann Jones AMLabour AM for the Vale of Clwyd, Ann Jones has challenged UK Government Ministers to do more than achieve “piece-meal” concessions from the insurance industry to ensure the flood victims get fairness.

Ms Jones, whose constituency includes flood-hit Rhyl and St Asaph said:

“Rather than focusing on the use of premium rate phone numbers, UK Government ministers should be looking at forcing insurers to pay out fair claims and ensuring that in the future, homeowners can get access to affordable insurance.

“The UK Government has also refused to give additional funding to Wales. While David Cameron has said money will be no object to those areas which have English Tory MPs, he is leaving Welsh victims to fend for themselves. The dramatic and severe budget reductions to the Welsh Government’s budget will mean that a two-tier response to the flooding will take place, with England seeing a great deal more support.

“The inclement weather does not stop at the border and it is purely a matter of fairness that Wales is given additional funding, on an equivalent level to the affected parts of England”.

UK Government Ministers met with representatives of the Association of British Insurers earlier this week.
