Pontypridd made it a hat-trick of wins in the Abercynon Sevens by claiming the 2010 tournament crown.
In a thrilling final Ponty beat Cardiff 31-27, with Tom Hetherington scoring the match winning try in the final move of the game and Player of the Tournament Dean Gunter putting over the resulting conversion.
Pontypridd were an impressive unit throughout, scoring 159 points and conceding just 41in their four games, captain Chris Dicomidis leading the way with four tries – joint top try scorer alongside David Gratton.
Pontypridd opened up the tournament against hosts Abercynon, and showed no mercy in a 52-0 win, Darren Waters, David Gratton (3), Dean Gunter, Jake Thomas, Chris Dicomidis and Gary Williams scoring the tries with Gunter, Gratton and Gary Williams adding the conversions.
Pontypridd played their second group match against Merthyr and in a one sided game came away with a 50-0 win with a brace of tries from Chris Dicomidis and with Matthew Nuthall, Dean Gunter, David Gratton,Gary Williams and Tom Hetherington scoring the rest.
The win meant a repeat of last year’s semi final, Pontypridd facing local rivals Rhydfelin. It was a tough encounter, with Ponty coming out on top 26-14 with tries scored by Garyn Lucas, Darren Waters, Adam Thomas and Gary Williams.
In the final, Pontypridd found themselves up against Cardiff who had beaten fellow Premiership side Aberavon in their semi final. In a pulsating finale which entertained the crowd, and where the lead changed hands five times, Pontypridd secured the win with tries scored by Matthew Nuthall, Chris Dicomidis, Darren Waters, Dean Gunter and, in the last play of the tournament, Tom Hetherington.
The 31 – 27 victory secured Pontypridd their third consecutive Abercynon Sevens title with new skipper Chris Dicomidis lifting his first trophy for the club.
