Caerphilly County Borough Council is marking Real Nappy Week (16th – 22nd May) by reminding local mums and dads about the benefits of using real nappies.
Welsh families throw away around 200 million disposable nappies every year. These nappies go to landfill sites, where they take up to 500 years to decompose.
Using real nappies instead reduces waste – families with one baby can cut their waste by half – and can save up to £500 for the first child and even more for subsequent children. What’s more, real nappies are made of natural fibres, whereas disposables contain plastics, absorbent chemicals and paper pulp.
Councillor Lyn Ackerman Cabinet Member for Public Services and Housing said, “Choosing real nappies over disposables is a fantastic way to cut the cost of looking after your baby, and of reducing the amount of waste you produce.
“More and more parents are discovering the benefits of real nappies, and realising how easy they are to use. Nowadays-real nappies come with Velcro or popper fasteners so you don’t need to worry about safety pins, there are lots of different styles available, and you can use them for more than one child.
“In addition there’s a great real nappy network which can provide all the help and support you need. Real nappy agents are full of fantastic advice, and even arrange ‘Nappuccino’ coffee mornings for you to meet other mums and dads. They can also tell you about ‘try before you buy’ deals or vouchers which may be available, and nappy laundry services in your area.”
