Police in Barry are warning householders to take extra security precautions following a spate of thefts flower baskets from gardens on Barry Island.
Neighbourhood Inspector Louise Davies said: “Garden features such as flower tubs and hanging baskets as well as ornaments such as gnomes, water fountains and other items often provide an easy target for thieves because they have little or no attention given to them to ensure they are made secure.
“Residents must be aware that there are thieves operating in the area who are on the lookout for these kinds of valuables. The advice to householders is to think about how secure their garden ornaments are.
“While there has been a recent spate of thefts from gardens on Barry Island I would ask all residents to consider the following points.
“Are your fences and gates in good repair? Do you have security lighting? Do you leave things outside all year round such as garden ornaments, furniture or even tools which could be removed easily or used to break into your house?
“If this is the case, secure them in position or fill them with heavy gravel to prevent easy carrying. Low energy dusk to dawn lighting is environmentally friendly and cheap to run.
“Cut back any over grown areas to remove hiding places so you can see what’s going on. Gravel on paths and driveways can alert you to someone approaching so intruders will not be so keen. Prickly plants and trellis can also provide extra protection from an intruder.
“When you’ve made your garden more secure, remember to lock things away every time. It only takes a minute to pick something up and walk off, so don’t be tempted to leave everything out while you’re inside.”
