Welsh author and poet, Owen Sheers, will give a special reading from his book Calon at Central Library this week, ahead of Wales’ Six Nations clash with France.
Sheers, the WRU’s artist in residence and one of Wales’ leading young writers, will read from Calon – A Journey to the Heart of Welsh Rugby, before taking questions and signing copies of the book.
The paperback edition of Calon, which celebrates Wales’ obsession with rugby, was published last month and has been updated to include the 2013 Six Nations and the British and Irish Lions Tour. The book is a record of a year spent at the heart of Welsh rugby and the inside story of Wales’ 2012 Six Nations campaign that culminated in a third Grand Slam success for the national team in eight years.
The reading will take place on Friday, February 21 from 6pm to 7pm before Wales kick off at the Millennium Stadium at 8pm.
Cabinet Member for Community and Neighbourhood Renewal and Social Justice, Cllr Lynda Thorne, said: “We are really delighted that Owen Sheers will be reading from his book at Central Library on Friday ahead of Wales’ clash with France. The book is widely acclaimed by sports fans and writers so I would encourage anyone with an interest in Welsh rugby to get down to Central Library to hear Owen tell his own story and have the opportunity to ask questions.
“The city will be alive on Friday evening, as it always is for an international game, and whether you will be in town to watch the match in the stadium or on TV somewhere, popping into Central Library for the reading will be a great way to get the evening started and stir up some ‘hwyl’ before kick-off.”
