A new project introducing five to seven-year-old children to sport in a fun way has been expanded, thanks to its popularity.
‘Sportstart’, run at Haverfordwest Leisure Centre since last year, aims to develop children’s agility, balance and co-ordination.
The 10-week course also helps to teach correct running, jumping, twisting, catching, throwing, kicking and striking.
New programmes are now set to be launched at Fishguard and Haverfordwest Leisure Centres on Saturday, May 15th.
“We are delighted to offer Sportstart in Fishguard Leisure Centre for the first time,” said Councillor Rob Lewis, Cabinet Member for Cultural Services, Sports, Leisure and Tourism.
“It has already proved very popular in Haverfordwest, and has been successful in introducing sport to an often overlooked age group.”
The project, which is run by qualified teachers and learning support assistants, also helps children understand the connection between sport and healthy living.
It is organised by Sport Pembrokeshire – Pembrokeshire County Council’s sports development arm – and funded by Sport Wales.
Sportstart will run on Saturday mornings in both Fishguard and Haverfordwest Leisure Centres, from May 15th to July 17th.
Sessions take place between 10am and 11am. The cost is £25 for 10 weeks, and the cost must be paid up-front for the 10-week block.
