A letter sent from the Strategic Director of Estyn, the Schools Inspectorate, to the Welsh Labour Education Minister has recommended that Brecon High School be put into special measures.
The letter stated that the School “has not made enough progress in the key areas for action identified in the Section 28 inspection, and important shortcomings remain in specific areas. The combined weight and seriousness of these important weaknesses are such that I am of the opinion that this school is in need of special measures.”
Commenting Kirsty Williams, AM for Brecon and Radnorshire, said:
“This is very sad news for all the Pupils, teachers, governors and parents associated with the School and the decision to put the school into special measures is a very disappointing one. What is absolutely vital now is that everyone gets together to put in place a plan to drive improvement to give our young people the very best chance to succeed.”
“The report did highlight that improvements had been made in many areas such as Key stage 3 and attendance. I hope these trends will continue with the extra support they should receive.”
Roger Williams, MP for Brecon and Radnorshire, added:
“Pupils deserve to be given the very best chance of fulfilling their potential and achieving the best exam results possible. These results will be with them for life and help determine their futures and we must all now pull together to help the school turn things around as soon as possible.”
