Land drainage improvements are due to start at Pheasant Road in Trebanos in the Swansea Valley next month.
Thanks to a Welsh Assembly grant towards the £132,000 cost of works, Neath Port Talbot Council has been able to move forward with the first phase of a flood alleviation scheme.
Consent has already been given by the Environment Agency so work can start on September 13th and is expected to last for 12 weeks.
The successful contractor for the project is Ian Davies Plant Ltd.
A number of options were considered to improve the flooding problem in this part of Trebanos caused by a culverted watercourse being unable to cope with storm events.
Phase 1 of the work involves construction of a reinforced concrete inlet structure at the entrance to the culvert which is located on land above Pheasant Road.
An access road to the site of the new inlet will also be built to allow easier maintenance.
When phase 2 is completed, the scheme will not only cope with floods that, on average, occur every 100 years, but will also deal with the impact of climate change.
Leader of Council, Ali Thomas, says he is delighted the scheme can now go ahead.
“I’m confident that residents and businesses in the nearby locality will welcome the start of these improvement works.
“Climate change and unprecedented rainfall is putting a huge strain on land drainage but thanks to this grant, the Council can make a start on these important improvement works.”
