More and more schools across the Caerphilly county borough are proudly displaying their environmental credentials by flying a prestigious Green Flag in their yards.
A total of 40 schools in the area have now been presented with an Eco Schools Green Flag in recognition of their environmental efforts.
Cllr Phil Bevan, CCBC cabinet member for education said, “This is a fantastic achievement and I’d like to congratulate all the schools who are working so hard to attain Green Flag status. It’s good to know that local children are learning important lessons about sustainability and the environment that will stay with them for the rest of their lives.”
Co-ordinated in the CCCB area by Tracy Evans, the council’s Education for Sustainable Development Officer, the international Eco Schools programme makes environmental awareness and action a central part of school life for both pupils and teachers alike. The green flag award is the highest achievement within the programme.
100% of schools in the Caerphilly county borough are currently registered on the project, all of whom are busy tackling the core environmental issues of energy, water, litter, waste minimisation, transport, global citizenship, healthy living and school grounds.
Matthew Bunt, South East Wales Eco School Coordinator commented “40 Green Flags flying in Caerphilly, 40 Eco-Schools, 40 schools reducing their environmental impact and making a positive impact on planet Earth, what a fantastic achievement.”
83 schools in the county borough have achieved an eco school award to date broken down into 40 green flag awards, 25 silver awards and 18 bronze awards, highlighting the commitment to sustainable development and global citizenship from schools in the Caerphilly county borough.
Tynewydd Primary School achieved their eco school green flag in November with an outstanding eco school assessment, then Cwmfelinfach Primary School became the landmark 40th school to achieve their green flag award last month.
Cathy Thomas, teacher at Cwmfelinfach Primary School commented, “At Cwmfelinfach Primary School we have been working for many years on embedding sustainability into our curriculum and giving pupils the opportunity to become responsible, healthy and happy citizens who care for their environment.”
