The Lap of Wales challengers stopped by the University Hospital of Wales (UHW) on 8 July to help raise awareness of the changes around organ donation being introduced in Wales and to encourage families to discuss the issue.
Opera singer Rhys Meirion and 11 other celebrity challengers started their journey on 4 July from Ysbyty Glan Clwyd and will travel around Wales, visiting major hospitals along the way, using different forms of transport, to raise awareness of the change in the organ donation law in Wales later this year.
The team are also raising funds for Cronfa Elen (Elen’s Fund), established by Rhys Meirion and his family after the tragic death of their sister, Elen Meirion in 2012.
Maria Battle, Chair of Cardiff and Vale University Health Board said: “We’re delighted to welcome to the Lap of Wales to UHW. The Lap of Wales Team has highlighted the importance of having a discussion with your family about your wishes regarding organ donation. I hope this challenge prompts people across Wales to talk about this and share their wishes with their family.”
Cardiff and Vale University Health Board staff supported the event by riding static bikes in the concourse at UHW and pledged to talk to their families about their wishes around the change in organ donation law.
The Lap of Wales has been supported by Cardiff & Vale Health Charity, which is the official charitable arm of Cardiff and Vale UHB and Awyr Las, the North Wales NHS Charity.
