Consumer watchdogs are warning local businesses to be on the look out for the latest scam.
A gentleman with a Manchester accent contacted a Neath Port Talbot business owner offering them the chance to clear business debts for a fee, only to discover the debt never existed.
Trading Standards Manager Steve Adie said, “Scams like these target unsuspecting businesses. In this case the scammers claimed a company owed money to publishing and advertising companies and wanted nearly £800 to clear the debt”.
He added, “The scammers went on to say that if the debt wasn’t paid, then bailiffs would be called in. A frightening experience for any business and totally unnecessary as the debt never existed.”
Mr Adie urged businesses are urged to contact their local Trading Standards office if they receive similar telephone calls.
