An exhibition of local schoolchildren’s work has gone on display at Barry Library to launch ‘Black History Month’.
Produced last year by year seven pupils from St Helen’s Junior School (now students at St Richard Gwyn Comprehensive) the work addresses the subject of ‘Uncomfortable Truths’ and aims to promote a respect for diversity.
Lead professional for English as an additional language, Martine Coles, said: “The school already follows the ‘International Primary Curriculum’ and so it seemed a natural extension to pilot ‘Uncomfortable Truths’, the study of the traces of the transatlantic slave trade. Pupils and school staff also received training from the Victoria and Albert Museum on the subject to help with their work.”
The Ethnic Minority Achievement Service worked in collaboration with the school and nominated young people to pass on what they learnt to teachers and children in different schools. To further embed Black History Month within the school curriculum, year six wrote speeches inspired by Martin Luther King’s ‘I have a Dream’.
