Launch of Small Steps to Safety DVD

In Wales, 400 children are admitted to hospital every day due to accidents in the home.

Unintentional injury is a leading cause of death and illness in under 14 year olds. Locally 30 % of parents of children aged 0-4 years have told us they would like help and/or advice about improving home safety.

Health Challenge Caerphilly CB and Upper Rhymney Valley Community First Partnerships have launched an educational child safety DVD focusing on accidents in the home, that are potentially fatal or cause the most serious or disabling injuries.

Local playgroups, residents and locations have been involved in the filming for that ‘more real touch’. This resource provides local people with local information and services that are not included in national resources i.e free fire safety checks. Advice and guidance was provided by Children In Wales.

Mr Huw Lewis – Deputy Minister for Children and Assembly Member for Merthyr and Rhymney launched to DVD at the White Rose Resource Centre – New Tredegar, “Caring for small children is challenging and parents often feel pushed for time. Accidents can happen but many can be avoided by taking simple actions around the home. This DVD provides simple, clear information on how to make your home safer. Having local parents and children in the DVD is brilliant and makes viewing fun and effective at the same time”

The DVD will be available to all new parents in the borough via Aneurin Bevan Health Board health visitors.

Cllr Rob Gough, CCBC cabinet member for public protection said, “I’d like to congratulate all those involved in the production of this informative DVD which clearly highlights the small steps that can help make a big difference.”
