There’s a musical Maori treat in store at the National Botanic Garden of Wales at the end of the month (July 30 & 31) when the group Lava stop off in Wales as part of their world tour.
From Wellington in New Zealand, Lava comprises the talented O’Connor family (mum, dad and two teenage daughters) plus Canadian composer/pianist Vanya Popov.
The group, who describe themselves as an “eclectic and versatile acoustic folk/pop/Celtic band” having already been wowing audiences in Australia, America, Canada and Germany with their stunning close harmonies and easy-listening melodies.
Mum Amanda is a brilliant flautist; Dad Sean a strong rhythm guitarist and Vanya a gifted and versatile keyboard/pianist. Daughters Acacia and Rosie are exciting up-and-coming violinists and keyboardists respectively. All band members also play percussion instruments to add rhythmic spice and drive during their live performances. Their concerts focus on a rich, original repertoire. Four of Lava’s members are composers and all contribute to arrangements, which include fine a capella songs. The O’Connors have Maori ancestry and Lava include the Maori language in their concerts.
The Garden’s head of marketing David Hardy said: “We’re hoping, if the weather is with us, they’ll play outside – if not, we’ll relocate to the stage in the Great Glasshouse. Either way, it should a fabulous musical experience.”
The performances will be from 2pm to 4pm on both days. Normal Garden admission applies. There is no extra charge for the concert.
