The Plaid leader of Caerphilly County Borough Council is calling on the public and politicians of all parties to support calls to name wards at the new £172m Ysbyty Ystrad Fawr after the area’s former collieries.
Councillor Allan Pritchard urged people to e-mail the chief executive and chair of the Aneurin Bevan Health Board to back the naming idea. He has already written himself.
The former Oakdale colliery mine worker said: “I’d love to see the public come behind this idea and I hope that politicians from all parties, whether Assembly Members, MPs or councillors will make their voices known.
“Mining is so embedded in our community and while we can move forward with the great new facility at Ysbyty Ystrad Fawr it would be perfectly right to remember our heritage and the sacrifice of miners. I can’t think of a more appropriate choice for our new hospital wards.
“As has been said previously, the mineworkers played such a pivotal role in supporting health care in the county borough.”
