Isle of Anglesey County Council Leader, Councillor Clive McGregor, has welcomed news that Wylfa will continue generating electricity beyond December 2010.
The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority today (Wednesday, October 13th) confirmed that its power station is to remain operational for at least another two years.
Wylfa had been scheduled to close at the end of this year. However, the decision to continue generating follows a period of review by regulators to validate the safe and compliant operation of the site, near Cemaes.
Responding to the announcement, Cllr McGregor, stressed, “Continued generation at Wylfa is good news for the Island’s economy during increasingly uncertain times. It will, of course, provide much needed job security for the hundreds of local families who depend on the quality employment provided at the site and offer further opportunities in terms of the local supply chain.”
Economic Development portfolio holder, Cllr Bob Parry OBE, added, “Today’s announcement is significant in that it reduces the gap between Wylfa’s decommissioning date and the potential start of construction of new nuclear build on Anglesey. Ensuring a smooth transition will be vital if we are to safeguard jobs and create new employment which will greatly support our economy for decades to come.”
“The continued production of safe low carbon energy at Wylfa also reflects and contributes to Energy Island programme and vision, currently being developed by the County Council.”
