Leadership Candidate Receives Backing of Local Plaid Constituency Party

Plaid Cymru leadership candidate Leanne Wood has been nominated for the leadership of the party by the Rhondda constituency party of Plaid Cymru.

The AM for South Wales Central was given the backing of her local members following a meeting on Thursday night.  Ms Wood has already received backing from Plaid branches in Porth, Pentre and Treorci and as well as further afield from Neath, Gower and Llanelli town branch.

Emyr Webster, chair of the Rhondda branch of Plaid Cymru, said: “Leanne is a principled politician who is not afraid to roll up her sleeves and talk to voters on the street and campaign whatever the weather.

“She offers a genuine alternative to the staid and uninspiring politics of the three London-based unionist parties and as Chair of Rhondda Plaid Cymru I am delighted that we have nominated Leanne for leader of our party.

“She is dedicated, hard-working and, on a personal note, she has been an inspiration. Leanne would lead Plaid and the nation to a great future and will always put the interests of Wales first.”

Ms Wood said: “I am very grateful for the backing of my home constituency.  It is good to know that Rhondda Plaid Cymru members have confidence in the vision I have for leading the party, expanding our appeal and taking the fight to Labour in their heartlands.”
