Learning Curve Service Provides Quality Of Life

A pioneering Rhondda Cynon Taf Council service that supports adults with learning disabilities has undergone a major change – and not in name only!

The Council’s innovative programme of work opportunities, day centres and community facilities have now come under the all-encompassing title of Learning Curve.

Changes have taken place in an effort to bring all those services under one easily-memorable title to help the general public identify the programme that best suits their needs.

Working in partnership with other organizations to provide a range of services to help and support adults with learning disabilities, and along with their parents and carers, Learning Curve aims to help those who use the service live a fulfilling active life within the community and enable them to reach their full potential.

With a huge variety of daytime opportunities and a whole range of units available throughout the entire County Borough, including placements in Garden Centres, the Coffee Shop, Day Centres and many various Community Units, staff are there to help, encourage and support all along the way.

Formerly known as the Daytime Opportunities Service, Learning Curve works to enable service users to develop competence in relationship building, making choices, achieving independence and becoming valued members of the community.

The service can offer:

  • Work experiences – providing opportunities to test out a range of work placements to help service users decide where their skills are best suited
  • Therapeutic and social activity
  • Core training to help individuals develop life skills and enhance their confidence
  • Volunteering opportunities
  • Leisure activities – these are arranged at a number of local centres
  • Personal programmes are developed and reviewed regularly to ensure that effective work continues with each individual service user.

Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Cabinet Member for Health, Social Care and Wellbeing Cllr Mike Forey said: “The re-branding of the service from Daytime Opportunities to Learning Curve Enterprises is a milestone in our aim to transform service provision and promises to encourage even more people to benefit from what is on offer.

“It represents much more than just a name change and is more than symbolic. It demonstrates the progress that the service has made with the introduction of a more innovative approach to service provision and delivery. The service has changed quite considerably over the last few years in the way it enables users to gain independence and choice.

“The development of more meaningful activities and vocational opportunities has enabled adults with learning disabilities to raise their aspirations, become more valued and gain key life skills. Learning Curve has a whole range of services on offer to enable them to live a fuller, more rewarding life.”
