Learning to trace your family tree

With a number of television programmes taking an interest in family history, more and more people are showing an interest in tracing their own family tree. As a result of the increase in tracing family roots, Gwynedd Council’s Archives Service is staging one-day courses to give people advice about how to start tracing their own family history.

The one day courses which will be held at the Meirionnydd Record Office in Dolgellau will be led by the Council’s staff which will give advice on how to set about tracing your family history. Those attending the courses will have an opportunity to look at the various sources and evidence, as well as a chance to ask the archivists any questions which might be of use in getting started will tracing their family tree.

Councillor Roy Owen, who leads on Archives for Gwynedd Council said:

“We hope that these courses will be an opportunity for anyone who is interested in tracing their family history to see the wealth of historically important records which are available, and that they have the chance to make use of these facilities at Gwynedd Council’s record offices.

“Similar courses which we have held in the past have been very popular, and we are confident that members of the public will be keen to book their places of these courses as well, so remember to book a place if you’re keen to attend one of the courses.”

The courses will be held on the following dates:

  • Saturday, 5 February 2011: Family History Course (Welsh session) at the Meirionnydd Record Office in Dolgellau.
  • Wednesday, 2 March 2011: Family History Course (English session) at the Meirionnydd Record Office in Dolgellau.

The one-day courses will begin at 10.
