The people of Swansea are being urged to do their bit to support the people of Haiti following January’s earthquake disaster.
The Lord Mayor of Swansea, Cllr Richard Lewis, is leading an appeal to help raise funds for the survivors of the earthquake that claimed the lives of more than 200,000 people.
Swansea Council gave its support to the people of Haiti and has set up a disaster fund to help channel cash to those who need it. The Council is also offering some of its facilities free for fund-raising activities organised by groups. This includes car parks for car boot sales and some venues for fund-raising events.
On top of this Cllr Lewis will be hosting a fund-raising event at the Mansion House this summer to help boost the fund.
Cllr Lewis said: “The earthquake was five months ago but I don’t think anyone has forgotten the images broadcast across the world of devastated lives and communities destroyed by that terrible event.
“Those images prompted the Council to do what it could to help the people of Haiti recover from such devastation.
“It will take years to recover and Haiti still needs our help. People in Swansea can help in a number of ways; either by donating money, organising an event or attending fund-raising events.
“I’m sure people will respond in a very positive way and display the kind of generosity and support that Swansea is well-known for.”
Anyone wishing to use Council facilities to stage an event should contact Lucy Butler on 01792 637554. Cheques should be made payable to the City & County of Swansea and sent to the Lord Mayor’s Office, City and County of Swansea, SA1 3SN and marked ‘HAITI’ on the back.
