A significant schools sports programme has been launched today at City Hall and will provide every child in Cardiff with the opportunity to participate in competitive sport.
The Cardiff Games is part of the London 2012 Olympic legacy and is set to provide every child in Cardiff with the opportunity to participate in competitive sport as well as creating a clear competition pathway from primary school and secondary school sport to community and club sport.
The project is managed by Sport Cardiff in partnership with several key partners including Cardiff Blues, Cardiff City Football Club, Welsh Netball, Glamorgan Cricket and Tennis Wales.
Cabinet Member for Sport, Leisure and Culture, Cllr Ramesh Patel said: “The 2014 Cardiff Games is an Olympic legacy multi-sport competition for Primary and Secondary schools in Cardiff. This new annual competition will build on existing school sport competitions, with the addition of some new and exciting sports.
“As part of Cardiff’s year as European Capital for Sport, the 2014 Cardiff Games seeks to inspire, motivate and encourage young people to participate in sport and take pride in representing their school.”
The initiative will encompass a number of existing competitions and events that are already successfully running in schools as well as introducing new sports such as canoeing, cheerleading and golf.
A school will gain points for entering teams in designated sports competitions and receive additional points depending on its final standing.
