A Pontypridd librarian has represented Wales at an award ceremony for organisations which use digital technology to improve service provision for disabled people.
Edwina Smart, who is based at Pontypridd Library, represented Wales at the 2009 Jodi Awards in London. The awards are presented to museums, galleries, libraries, archives, arts organisations and heritage venues which use digital technology to widen access to information, collections, learning and creativity for disabled people.
It is the third year Edwina has represented RCT Library Service and CyMAL – the Museums Archives and Libraries Wales division of the Welsh Assembly Government – at the awards.
Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Cabinet Member for Culture and Recreation Cllr Robert Bevan said: “We are delighted that Edwina was able to represent us at this prestigious award ceremony. She was chosen for her knowledge and committment to widening access to Information Technology for all sectors of the community.”
Named in memory of Jodi Mattes (1973-2001), who was a tireless champion for equal access to culture for disabled people, the awards were first given to museums, libraries and archives in 2003.
The 2009 winners were announced by Martha Lane Fox, the Government’s Digital Inclusion Champion, on December 2 at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. All winners had thoroughly involved disabled people in service design.
