Libraries in RCT Provide Pioneering Cancer Service

A unique cancer support information service has been launched in libraries throughout Rhondda Cynon Taf.

In partnership with Macmillan Cancer Support the service is the first of its kind in Wales and offers comprehensive information about cancer at the county’s 29 libraries and four mobile libraries.

The Council was approached by Diane Raybould of the Cancer Focus Group in Rhondda Cynon Taf to set up a cancer patient information service in its libraries.

In conjunction with Rhondda Cynon Taff Teaching Local Health Board and the South East Wales Cancer Network the Council’s Libraries and Museums Service has created designated areas in the libraries, which offer free information about cancer including its diagnosis and treatment.

The areas hold dedicated collections of leaflet material. Libraries already hold book-stock on a variety of medical conditions, and these titles would also play a part in the patient information service.

Although the cancer information service will only run from static libraries, it will be promoted on mobile libraries and via the service for housebound readers as well.

Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Cabinet Member for Culture and Recreation Cllr Robert Bevan said: “At some time in our lives we will all be affected by cancer either through friends or relatives being diagnosed with disease or even we as individuals.

“This service – the first of its kind in Wales – will be of massive benefit to all those who require comprehensive information about cancer. As an authority we fully support this initiative and look forward to continued partnership working with Macmillan in providing such an important service.

Ginny Brink, Macmillan information and support services adviser for Wales, said, “Macmillan has expertise in providing comprehensive information about cancer. We know that cancer makes people feel confused and vulnerable but information gives back a sense of control and dignity.

“It can help at all stages from the initial diagnosis through treatment and beyond. We have access to an extensive library of information and visitors will be able to request information free of charge.”

As well as the booklets and leaflets, Macmillan has trained all library staff so they can offer help and support to deal with enquiries.

In addition to the information about the disease, people affected by cancer can find out about help with benefits, grants as well as access to counselling and further support offered by local cancer charity, Cynon Valley Cancer Support.
