Lifeline for Conwy libraries

Clwyd West AM Darren Millar has welcomed a decision by councillors in Conwy, which could safeguard the future of libraries in in his constituency.

A joint meeting of Conwy County borough Council’s Communities and Customers Committees decided last night to back plans to keep Kinmel Bay and Cerrigydrudion libraries open and run them with community involvement and support. The proposals still need to be confirmed by Conwy’s Cabinet.

Darren said:

‘I’m very delighted that Conwy’s councillors have decided to throw local libraries a lifeline after what has been a hard fought campaign.

‘Libraries offer important facilities for the local community, providing learning opportunities and access to important IT and internet facilities that can be used to help people find jobs and improve employment opportunities.

‘Both Kinmel Bay and Cerrigydrudion have been defined as deprived areas in terms of educational attainment and income levels and it is therefore essential that these libraries receive extra protection from closure. I am pleased that local councillors have recognised this and hope that Conwy’s Cabinet will confirm their recommendation to keep these libraries open.’
