The Mothers’ Union plays a key role in supporting family life in Wales, the Archbishop of Wales said today (Tuesday).
Dr Barry Morgan praised the charity for its pioneering campaigning work and practical projects as its Worldwide President visited South Wales to meet members. Rosemary Kempsell began her tour of the Llandaff Diocese with a service at Llandaff Cathedral.
Dr Morgan, who is also a member of the Mothers’ Union, said, “The Mothers’ Union has been the Church’s “mumsnet” for generations and today it is still at the forefront of campaigning on a wide range of family issues, both in this country and abroad – from the increasing sexualisation of products aimed at children to child poverty, literacy and inequality. It also offers practical help to disadvantaged families, such as a caravan at Trecco Bay in Porthcawl to enable families to go on holiday. Its members are involved in the life of churches all over Wales and make a huge contribution.”
Mrs Kempsell, who visited the Trecco Bay caravan during her tour, said, “Our members in Wales are very supportive – there is a strong cultural background here of helping the wider society. I am delighted to visit and meet them face-to-face.”
In an address to members at St Catharine’s Church, Baglan, today Mrs Kempsell said, “Local Mothers’ Union groups have the skills, knowledge, contacts and (wo)man-power to make things happen. This is why in 2011 we wish to invest in the programmes and activities that are the most effective in empowering Mothers’ Union members to address needs in their community.”
Raye Saunders, President of the Llandaff Diocese Mothers’ Union, said, “Since Rosemary Kempsell was appointed Worldwide President four years ago she has enthused and encouraged our four million members in 81 countries. We are delighted she is now visiting Llandaff.”
